Affordable Housing, Community Development

State Officials Receptive, Committed To TOD Efforts

Led by state Transportation Commissioner James Redeker and Deputy DECD Commissioner Kip Bergstrom, a wide array of housing, transit, planning, environmental and responsible growth advocates have met several times to shape a state policy that incorporates affordable and mixed-income housing into rail line and Busway station development.

Bergstrom and Redeker, who are overseeing transit—supportive and transit-oriented development efforts by their respective departments, have provided the group with guidance on educating local officials and community leaders about the potential of station-area development in providing needed housing opportunity, making attractive and economically-wise “places” near transit, and connecting housing, transportation, environmental and economic growth policy so it benefits the state and the municipalities that house the stations and develop around them.
