Self-Assessment Tool Available for Family Shelters

Administration for Children & Families (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services)

The Administration for Children & Families has created a tool to be used by family shelters to create “safe and developmentally appropriate settings for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.” Since approximately 672,000 children under the age of six will experience homelessness sometime this year, this tool is designed to help shelters lessen the negative physical, socio-emotional, and intellectual development barriers that these children will face.

The tool includes five focus areas: Health & Safety; Wellness & Development; Workforce Standards & Training; Programming; and Food & Nutrition. Links to further resources are listed.
