On the Road to Winning the War Against Homelessness in CT

From the desk of Kellyann Day, CEO of New Reach, Inc. and Chairman of the Reaching Home Steering Committee.

Eleven years ago the Partnership for Strong Communities launched the Reaching Home Campaign based on a simple premise: Homelessness is unacceptable. It is solvable and preventable.

This powerful idea has guided the fight to end homelessness in Connecticut for over a decade. Its inherent truth has inspired stakeholders across the state to work together to find solutions to end homelessness in all of its forms for all of our citizens.

CT has invested in solutions and the results are irrefutable. We are winning the war against homelessness. We are on track to end Veteran homelessness by the end of 2015, chronic homelessness (for those who have been homeless for a long time and have a disability) by the end of 2016; and family and childhood homelessness by 2022.   There is a very bright light at the end of this tunnel.

As I reflect on the efforts of the many people responsible for the success of the Reaching Home Campaign, I am humbled by the way our community has risen to the occasion: setting aside differences, standing by our commitment to work together and staying the course.

The work we have done proves that it does indeed “Take a Village.” The power of many far outweighs the capacity of any one individual or organization. While the challenges at times seemed insurmountable, our perseverance has paid off. While our work is not done, we now know that it soon will be.

Please join me on June 11th at our 10th annual Reaching Home Celebration Dinner and Housing Awards as we celebrate our achievements and honor those among us whose contributions this year exemplify the best of the work we do.

While we can now count in months instead of years the time it will take to end homelessness in Connecticut, we still need your support to reach our goal.

Let’s finish strong. Let’s finish together.
