Report Offers Policy Recommendations for Working with Transgender Homeless Youth

Center for American Progress

In February 2015, the Center for American Progress released a report reviewing the demographics and experiences of transgender youth who are homeless and offering policy recommendations. Beyond 4 Walls and a Roof: Addressing Homelessness Among Transgender Youth relates that almost 40% of youth experiencing homeless identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) and that reported numbers have been growing. Transgender youth experiencing homelessness face barriers to finding safe shelter environments and to accessing medical care.

The report highlights four strategies for preventing and ending homelessness among transgender youth:

  • Stabilization services: Improve resources and support for those who are homeless and at-risk.
  • Nondiscrimination policies: Establish guidelines that eradicate disparities in housing, education, health care, and law enforcement.
  • System reform: Equip systems such as schools, foster care, and juvenile justice to support the unique needs of transgender youth.
  • Date-collection: Incorporate gender identity into current data collection efforts in a sensitive manner.
