Report Finds Increasing Demand and Affordability Challenges in Rental Market

Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University

A new report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University examines the rental housing market and the affordability and supply challenges facing America’s renters. The report – America’s Rental Housing: Expanding Options for Diverse and Growing Demand – offers an in-depth analysis of demand, supply, market conditions and affordability related to rental housing.

Nationally, the report notes that renters make up an increasing portion of the housing market, driven by factors such as the bursting of the housing bubble and the subsequent economic recession. Another significant factor noted in the report is demographic change, with millennials comprising a significant portion of the households in the rental market. The report also provides analysis of federal policy and funding challenges that have limited the availability of affordable housing and housing subsidies for households in need.

State data is provided in the report and a web-based interactive map is available, showing that Connecticut’s metro regions face high housing costs for rental housing.
