NLIHC Finds Many Seeking Affordable Housing Wait Years for a Home

National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)

Last week the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) report, Housing Spotlight: A Long Wait for a Home, found Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV) and Public Housing waiting lists across the nation were often closed and those that were open had long waiting periods.

The results found that over half of the HCV waiting lists were closed to new applicants, while about one out of ten Public Housing lists were closed. Those applicants placed on lists often waited over a year to receive a voucher. One out of every four HCV wait lists had a wait time of over 3 years, while one out of every four Public Housing waiting lists had a wait time of over a year.

The report suggests expanding funding for vouchers and public housing for extremely low income (ELI) households. These households earn incomes at or below 30% of the area median income (AMI) and account for the majority of residents on the HCV and Public Housing waiting lists.
