New Report: The Kids Aren’t Alright

The Children’s Defense Fund

Fifty years after Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson declared a War on Poverty, the Children’s Defense Fund has released a report that says “the United States is still not a fair playing field for millions of children afflicted by preventable poverty, hunger, homelessness, sickness, poor education and violence.”

The report, “The State of America’s Children 2014,” also says:

  • Every fifth child is poor.
  • Every 10th child is extremely poor.
  • Children are the poorest age group and the younger they are, the poorer they are.

The report also said that without government tax credits and food, housing and energy benefits, child poverty would have been 57 percent higher in 2012. Subsidies for housing – still a family’s single largest expense -- lifted 1 million children out of poverty, the report said.
