Leveraging Anchor Institutions to Create Affordable Housing

The National Housing Conference recently released a report - The Role of Anchor Institutions in Restoring Neighborhoods: Health Institutions as a Catalyst for Affordable Housing and Community Development – that explores how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can be leveraged to encourage anchor institutions, like nonprofit hospitals, to improve their local communities.

The authors highlight how the ACA requires large nonprofit hospitals and other health care institutions to move beyond simply providing traditional hospital services to meet the health needs of residents in their community. This can include improving the quality and affordability of homes in a neighborhood, which research has shown is a key determinant of a healthy life.

The authors encourage community organizations to work with their local health care representatives to shape goals that are mutually beneficial to the priorities, concerns, and development of the community as well as the hospital.
