JCHS Conducts International Comparison of Rental Burden

Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS)

In a new report entitled Rental Housing: An International Comparison, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies found that the share of U.S. renters spending more than half of their income on housing costs (28%) was higher than any other country observed in the eleven country study. The study also found that U.S. renters (31.1%) were second only to Spain (32.3%) in the proportion of income spent on housing costs.

Additionally, the report compares the availability of housing vouchers. Data suggests that although there are relatively fewer U.S. renters that receive housing vouchers, those that receive vouchers are provided with considerably more financial assistance than their international counterparts.
