HUD Seeks Comments on Program that Expands Housing Choice for Voucher Holders

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is requesting public comment on the proposed Small Area Fair Market Rent (SAFMR) method to increase housing opportunities for Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) recipients. The HCV program helps very-low income families rent safe and affordable homes in the private market. The goal of the SAFMR is to expand housing choices for HCV tenants living in neighborhoods with deeply concentrated poverty to areas with better schools, jobs, transportations, and services opportunities.

Fair Market Rents (FMRs) determine payment standards for various HUD and state-funded programs, such as the federal Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. Increases in FMRs provide a wider range of housing choice, allowing HCV recipients to access housing units in higher opportunity communities which typically have higher rents.
