HUD Offers Guidance on Reducing College Student Housing Insecurity

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab found that undergraduate students are highly vulnerable to housing and economic instability. Their report - Addressing Housing Insecurity and Living Costs in Higher Education: A Guidebook for Colleges and Universities –provides strategies to improve student retention by addressing housing insecurity and other costs associated with higher education.

The majority of students living in off campus housing, away from family, earned incomes below the poverty level. The high cost of housing and lack of income lead many to sacrifice purchasing food and educational resources.

The authors suggest reducing housing fees for low-income students, connecting eligible students with benefits programs, providing emergency aid to help students manage short-term crises, etc. to help reduce the number of college students that suffer from the consequences of housing insecurity. The suggestions offered are informed by examples from colleges and universities across the nation.
