The Colin McEnroe Show: David Fink on Affordable Housing

On March 28, Matthew Yglesias, author of “The Rent is Too Damn High”, David Fink, Policy Director of the Partnership for Strong Communities, and Sheila Crowley, President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, spoke about the issue of high rent on the Colin McEnroe Show with guest host Mark Oppenheimer.

Yglesias discussed how it has become too expensive to build housing in areas of great economic opportunity such as Chicago, Hartford, and NYC, which has resulted in people being unable to live in those areas.  Yglesias stated that economies suffer as a result of these high housing prices since people then have to go elsewhere to find jobs. If individuals do find jobs in these cities, they have to live further away and transportation costs increase as a result.  Fink and Yglesias spoke about how density and changes to zoning laws are a way to allow more building and therefore create more housing options and lower the cost of living for people. Crowley offered perspective on Connecticut’s high housing costs in relation to other areas of the country where housing costs have declined over the past couple of years.
