Brief Provides Summary of Youth Homelessness Causes, Services

National Network for Youth

The National Network for Youth (NN4Y) has released a brief summarizing current research on youth homelessness. What Works to End Youth Homelessness: What We Know Now reviews the causes of youth homelessness, lists service structures for youth experiencing homelessness, and offers steps to take towards ending youth homelessness.

The NN4Y report describes four main reasons why youth experience homelessness in America: an unstable family situation, involvement with foster care or juvenile justice, a family history of homelessness or poverty, and disconnection from education, employment, and social support.

The report outlines all of the services that offer support to youth experiencing homelessness, from drop-in centers to workforce development, and includes examples of relevant organizations from across the United States.

The brief also includes potential avenues for data collection on this population and a list of steps for communities trying to end youth homelessness. It concludes with recommendations for a national collaborative framework and priority programs to end youth homelessness.
