Apartment List Survey Illuminates Millennials’ Housing Cost Struggles

Apartment List

A new report by Apartment List analyzes the financial assistance that non-student millennials receive from their parents, in a time where many millennials are burdened by student loans, and the cost of housing far outpaces wage increases.

Apartment List found that 7.9 percent of those non-student millennials surveyed receive some help from their parents for rent. Of those, one in three reported their parents pay the entire monthly rental payment.

This housing cost assistance is not limited to renting millennials, 17.1 percent expect some form of monetary assistance from parents with a down payment. According to the report, because higher income families are more likely to be able to assist with a down payment, down payment assistance is a common way for high-income families to pass wealth from generation to generation.
