Advocates Push for Housing Trust Fund in Jobs & Deficit Reduction Plans

A letter urging President Obama to include $10 billion in funding for the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF) in the jobs package he is expected to announce after Labor Day was signed by 44 national organizations, including the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the National AIDS Housing Coalition, Mercy Housing, and more.

The letter cited evidence that investing in the NHTF would create 122,000 new jobs in the construction industry and 30,000 ongoing jobs in housing operations, according to NLIHC.

Additionally, NLIHC President and CEO Sheila Crowley sent a letter to leaders of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, better known as the Super Committee, urging them to direct any savings gained from reform of the Mortgage Interest Deduction to the NHTF. It is widely speculated that the Mortgage Interest Deduction could be reformed when Congress reconvenes with all eyes on the Super Committee on Tuesday, according to NLIHC.
